The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
Alison Hernandez

One of the key priorities in my Police and Crime Plan is supporting safe, resilient and connected communities, where everyone plays their part in helping people feel safer and more supported.

Across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, we see the difference that volunteers, community organisations and dedicated individuals make every day. Whether supporting vulnerable people, responding to emergencies, reducing isolation or bringing communities together, their efforts help create stronger and more resilient neighbourhoods.

Last week, members of my Office attended the Torbay Community Champion Awards, which recognise those who make an outstanding contribution to their communities through the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector.

The awards celebrate individuals whose work often takes place behind the scenes, but whose impact is felt across the communities they serve. They provide an important opportunity to recognise and thank those who go above and beyond to support others.

I was particularly pleased that the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner sponsored the Emergency Worker of the Year Award. This category recognises individuals working to keep communities safe through emergency services, safety awareness, training or activities that help protect and support people during challenging situations.

Congratulations to Claire Knight of Phoenix Rising CIO, who was named Emergency Worker of the Year. Through her commitment to supporting people affected by domestic abuse and helping survivors rebuild their lives, Claire has made a significant difference to individuals and families across Torbay.

Congratulations also to Paul Northey of Riviera Events Solutions CIC, who was awarded runner-up. Through his work supporting community events, emergency planning and resilience initiatives, Paul has demonstrated a strong commitment to helping communities prepare for and respond to challenging situations.

Both Claire and Paul embody the community spirit, dedication and commitment to service that these awards seek to celebrate. Their work highlights the vital role that individuals and community organisations play in creating safer places and supporting those most in need.

The awards were also a reminder of the incredible work taking place across Torbay and beyond. Strong communities are built through partnership, volunteering and people who are willing to step forward to support others. By recognising and celebrating these contributions, we can encourage more people to get involved and continue building communities that are safe, resilient and connected.

My thanks go to everyone who was nominated, as well as the organisers, sponsors and supporters of the awards. Every nominee should be proud of the difference they are making to the lives of others.
