The Police and Crime Commissioner has a statutory duty under section 1 of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 to secure the maintenance of the police force for their area and the efficiency and effectiveness of that police force. The Commissioner sets the annual police budget and determines the precept (i.e. the levy on the council tax bill that will go toward policing).
