Drug and alcohol misuse can have far-reaching consequences for individuals, families and communities. It is closely linked to crime, antisocial behaviour, violence, exploitation, road danger and wider health inequalities. For this reason, drugs and alcohol are combined as a key priority within the Police and Crime Plan.
The Commissioner is working with police, local authorities, health services and community organisations to reduce the harm caused by drugs and alcohol. This includes supporting enforcement activity against those who profit from criminal drug networks, disrupting organised crime groups and working collaboratively across the South West through initiatives such as Operation Scorpion to target drug supply routes into the region.
At the same time, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner recognises the importance of prevention, education and support. Investment is being made in initiatives that help people address substance misuse issues, improve community safety and reduce alcohol and drug-related antisocial behaviour. This includes town centre safety projects, community grant funding, support for vulnerable people and work to tackle drink and drug driving through road safety partnerships.
By balancing enforcement with prevention and recovery, the Commissioner’s approach aims to reduce crime, protect vulnerable people and help build healthier, safer and more resilient communities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
