Drugs

Drugs can have a devastating social impact on community life and on those who are dependent upon them.

The Commissioner says: “My office regularly hears from people whose quality of life is adversely affected by drugs, be that when loved ones become addicted or victims, businesses suffer because of what is happening on the streets, or due to the financial hardship which often is associated.

“To tackle drugs effectively we must address both the supply of drugs into our communities and the level of demand for those drugs.

“Communities are often too scared to do what is needed and report these crimes so there is a big piece of work needs doing to give people the confidence and tools to report offences as well as working to break the cycle of addiction and reduce the demand for drugs.

“I want to help and encourage people to report drug dealing occurring in their community – either to the police or Crimestoppers and by doing this make the South West a hostile environment for drug dealing.

“I want the Chief Constable to account for the effectiveness of the police response to drug trafficking and enforcement locally and to work with others in a regional and national response to regional and national approaches.

“I will encourage the delivery of services needed to tackle drug demand and supply.

“And I want to raise awareness of the county lines threat and support collaborative and multi-agency approaches to the sharing of intelligence and best practice.

“If we can do all this we will disrupt the organised crime gangs that poison our communities, reduce trafficking, reduce addiction and above all reduce the number of victims.”
